Balancing School and Pregnancy: Tips for High School Students

Graduation is still on your mind. So is everything else. Finding out you’re pregnant while you’re still in high school can make everything feel like it’s happening at once, and it’s normal not to know where to start.

The Hope Bridge Pregnancy Resource Center offers free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and mentorship for students facing an unplanned pregnancy.

You Have Legal Protections at School

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that prohibits discrimination against pregnant and parenting students at schools receiving federal funding.

Under Title IX, your school:

  • Cannot remove you from classes or activities because of your pregnancy
  • Must provide reasonable accommodations, including excused absences for medical appointments
  • Must allow you to make up missed work
  • Cannot allow staff or other students to harass you

If you need accommodations, your school counselor or Title IX coordinator can explain the process. You only need to share what is necessary to get the support you need.

Confirm Your Pregnancy With an Ultrasound

A home pregnancy test is a starting point.

A free ultrasound at the Hope Bridge confirms the full picture: how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is in the uterus, and whether the pregnancy is developing normally. That information is important for your health and helps you plan ahead, including your school schedule.

Support Is Available

Pregnancy can affect your energy, focus, and daily routine. Some changes are normal and expected, but they can still show up in school, activities, and everyday life. Understanding what’s changing can make it easier to know when to ask questions or look for support.

The Hope Bridge’s free Building Blocks mentorship program offers one-on-one sessions covering pregnancy, newborn care, parenting basics, and practical life skills. It’s designed to give you knowledge and confidence as you figure out what comes next.
