Don’t Feel Like You Have To Handle This Alone
Before you think about telling your parents, it can help to pause for a moment and take a breath.
Give yourself space to process what you’re feeling and to think about when and how you might want to have that conversation.
It’s also normal for parents to react strongly at first, especially if the news comes as a surprise. In many cases, their initial reaction isn’t their final one; they may need time to process their own emotions before they can respond more calmly and fully support you.
If you’d like support as you think things through or prepare for that conversation, The Hope Bridge Pregnancy Resource Center is here for you.
You can book a confidential appointment to talk through your thoughts and feelings in a safe, non-judgmental space, and to help you take things one step at a time.
First Step: Confirm Your Pregnancy
It’s important to make sure you are actually pregnant before telling your parents.
We recommend taking a pregnancy test to confirm your pregnancy. If you are unsure how to take the test or want high accuracy, we offer walk-in pregnancy tests at our center.
For more accurate information, an ultrasound can be performed after a positive pregnancy test to see how far along you are and how the pregnancy is developing.
Second Step: Choose The Right Moment
The next step after a confirmed pregnancy is to pick the right moment to tell your parents. Choose a quiet, private setting where your parents have time to talk without feeling rushed.
Simply saying you need to tell them something is important is enough to set the tone; don’t worry about planning each word of the conversation.
Consider Your Safety
If there is a history of unsafe or aggressive behavior in your household, then you have every right to seek support before telling your parents. You could talk to another family member, a counselor, or a family friend to help you figure out how to tell your parents and move forward.
We are also here to help you talk through your pregnancy confidentially. Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for 24/7 support if you ever feel concerned about your safety.
