Recognizing Abuse and Its Effects

Abuse isn’t always physical. Emotional or controlling behavior, such as constant criticism, isolation from friends or family, or pressure regarding your pregnancy, can be just as harmful.

According to the CDC, 2 in 5 women experience intimate partner violence at some point in their lives, and approximately 324,000 pregnant women experience abuse in the United States each year. Stress from abuse can affect both your physical and mental health during pregnancy and may increase the risk of complications, such as preterm labor, low birth weight, or other pregnancy-related concerns.

Your Safety Comes First

If you are in danger, call 911.

For confidential, 24/7 support, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233. Trained advocates can help you create a safety plan, access emergency housing, and navigate other resources to protect you and your baby. This may include identifying trusted friends or family, securing important documents and money, or arranging a “go bag” with essentials in case you need to leave quickly.
