If you recently found out you’re pregnant, you’re likely feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. On top of processing your own emotions, the thought of telling your parents may be adding to your stress.

How will they react? Will they be disappointed? Will they support you?

These are all valid concerns, but it’s important to remember that you don’t have to face this conversation alone. There are steps you can take to make sharing your news easier.

Read on to learn more about these steps—or contact The Hope Bridge Pregnancy Resource Center to find a safe space to talk.

Steps to Tell Your Parents You’re Pregnant

1. Process Your Own Feelings First

Before talking to your parents, take time to process your emotions and thoughts about the pregnancy. Are you feeling scared? Confused? Do you already have an idea of what you’d like to do? The more you understand your own feelings, the more confident you’ll be when talking to them.

2. Choose the Right Time and Place

Timing is important. Pick a time when your parents aren’t busy or distracted, so they can give you their full attention. Also, choose a private, comfortable setting where you’ll feel safe to express yourself.

Are you worried about your safety when telling your parents? If so, then it’s important to choose a public setting (like a park) and consider bringing a trusted friend, family member, or mentor to help mediate the conversation and provide emotional support.

3. Plan What You Want to Say

It may help to write down your thoughts beforehand or practice what you want to say. Keep it simple and direct:

“Mom, Dad, I need to talk to you about something important. I just found out I’m pregnant, and I wanted to tell you because I need your support.”

4. Prepare for Different Reactions

Your parents might react with shock, disappointment, or even anger at first. This doesn’t mean they don’t love you. Give them time to process the news, just as you needed time to process it yourself.

You might be surprised that their initial reaction will calm down once they’ve had time to think it all through.
